This is a fantastic opportunity to join in the re-establishment of the Holm Hill Shoot located 10 minutes south of Carlisle with good transport routes from the NW England, NE England and SW Scotland
The Holm Hill Shoot is located in North Cumbria just South of Carlisle and 10 minutes from the M6. However don’t be fooled by this convenient location as Holm Hill is a scenic and tranquil estate with striking terrain capable of showing some fantastic Pheasants.
The shoot extends to just over 2800 acres with around 24 drives which include 12 “main” drives and 12 “outside” drives. At the centre of the shoot is a small riverside Bothy which serves as a meeting and “hospitality” point.
Holm Hill has been established as a Pheasant Shoot for several years and I have recently taken on the Sporting Rights for the estate for the coming season. The estate was unoccupied by a shooting tenant for the last season and there is some rebuilding work to do but this is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in re-establishing Holm Hill as a renowned sporting estate
Holm Hill has a good mixture of topography with well spaced mature hardwood and softwood woodland. Many drives are off rolling hills which present challenging and rewarding shooting. There are notable drives from the mature wooded banks over the River Caldew and out of Raughton Wood over to Clay Bank.
Our driven days start with a light breakfast at the Shoot Bothy on the side of the River Caldew. I anticipate 4-5 drives per day on our syndicate days and in this first year and modest and sensible bag of 50-60 challenging birds for a maximum of 9 guns. Including in my days will be elevenses in the field and a BBQ style “Game” lunch back at the Bothy. The emphasis of a shoot day is on tradition, camaraderie, relaxation and sportsmanship.
The syndicate will shoot on 8 days which will be mid-week (probably a Friday) although there is the option for two Saturday’s. There will be 9 guns ate £2200 per gun. The release is projected at 3000 Pheasants.
I firmly believe that there is much more to a shoot day than just the shooting, I want my shooting companions to go away having had and enjoyable and memorable day from start to end. Shoot days gather on the morning at our riverside Shoot Bothy where a light breakfast of pastries, cakes, savouries and drinks is served. Mid-morning we break for “elevensies” in the field. Lunch is provided back at our Shoot Bothy and our guns can experience a selection of freshly BBQ cooked local Game and wildfowl.
About the host: My name is Sam Griffin and I’m a 21 year old ex-graduate but with lifelong shooting experience and I am passionate about my sport. During my last year at Uni’ I have worked as a part-time shooting guide and coach, it was my intention to work as a Pigeon Shooting Guide but when Holm Hill came available I could not resist the opportunity to take on and develop my own prestigious Game Shoot. My own family have run the Deepdale and Stobgreen Game Shoots for many years and I helped on the rearing fields and around the shoot since I could first walk! I’ve shot since I was 5 and had a shotgun certificate since I was 8. I’ve been fortunate to shoot on an almost daily basis, I shoot all game species weekly in season, I’m a very keen and active wildfowler and dedicated Pigeon Shooter.
