A small, friendly family-run shoot near Macclesfield where the emphasis is on enjoying good company, great scenery and the opportunity for some challenging sport. We welcome Guns with all levels of experience and tuition can be offered for the novice shot.
We are a laid back and friendly shoot, but our focus is always on safe and responsible shooting. At all times we aim to follow the Code of Good Shooting Practice and we ask that all those shooting with us are BASC members or otherwise insured. We do not encourage alcohol to be consumed during the shoot day.
We put down a modest number of pheasants each year, and occasionally partridges. We are not a ‘big bag’ shoot and typically aim for around 30 bird days, but as with all shoots, this can vary with conditions. The steep terrain, thick cover and compact layout make for some difficult beating conditions but do provide some challenging and exciting shots.
Being a small shoot, we don’t have a full time keeper – several of us chip in to manage and keeper the shoot in our spare time. So, we ask all Guns to give us a hand on work days in the run-up to the season to help us get some of the bigger tasks done. The work days are good fun, a chance to get to know your fellow Guns and to contribute to the season ahead. Dates for the 2022/23 season: 1 Oct, 15 Oct, 5 Nov, 19 Nov, 3 Dec, 17 Dec, 26 Dec, 7 Jan, 21 Jan, 28 Jan
The shoot covers a variety of unique ground over several hundred acres – including woodland, pasture, scrub grass, gorse, quarry workings and bracken banks. We’re situated in a great position offering excellent views of the surrounding hills. The shoot is accessible by car along a gravel track and we have a car parking area (so having a 4×4 is not essential). There is a small shoot hut where hot food and drink is available on a shoot day
We usually meet around 8:30am in our shoot hut the morning for hot drinks and breakfast. The shoot briefing is around 9am and we usually start the first drive by around 9:30. The number of drives per day can vary according to conditions – on average we usually have 2-3 drives and then head back to the shoot hut for hot drinks. Sometimes we have one more drive and then break for lunch; other times we may shoot through and have lunch at the end of the day. We usually finish for the day at around 1-2pm but shooting can go on longer.
We offer hot drinks and a hot sandwich on arrival. We provide a hot lunch which usually consists of a game dish like a curry or stew. We ask Guns to make a small contribution to cover the cost of the food for themselves and the beaters. Guns and beaters all mix together on a shoot day and for meals.
